New: Sponsorship Award of the Art, Market & Law Section
The German Photographic Association, DGPh, with the support of Whitewall Photo Lab, is proud to announce their new EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD. This biannual award, offered by the Art, Market & Law section of the DGPh, will debut with an award ceremony during Paris Photo in November 2024 at the Leica Gallery, Paris.
The aim of the EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD is to promote up-and-coming photographic artists. According to insiders, photographic art accounts for around five percent of the global art market. Affordability of photographic art, compared with other media and art forms, continues to attract many collectors, especially young ones. Around half of all photographs traded on the art market are in a price range below 1,500 euros.
The Art, Market and Law Section is the youngest section of the renowned DGPh, which was co-founded in 1951 by photo collector L. Fritz Gruber. Today, with more than 400 members, it is also the second largest and concentrates the DGPh's concentrated expertise in the art market. Members of the section include gallery owners, curators, exhibition organizers, representatives of auction houses and many other art market experts, such as publicists and art consultants.
Said Section Chairman Thomas Gerwers: "Despite the variety of prizes awarded by the DGPh, we are closing an existing gap with the EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD and are pleased to be able to make a contribution to the further profile of the DGPh in the field of the photographic art marketing."
The concept for the award was preceded by intensive discussions with internationally renowned art market experts from the DGPh membership, above all, the photography specialist and consultant Simone Klein, who is part of the jury.
The other jurors of the first EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD 2024 also represent the who's who of the photographic art scene with Celina Lunsford (Artistic Director Fotografie Forum Frankfurt); Ute Noll (gallery owner and curator); Sophie-Charlotte Opitz (curator and Krupp scholarship holder); Michael Biedowicz (DGPh Chair, gallery owner, curator, lecturer); and Sebastian Lux (Curator F.C. Gundlach Foundation).
The EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD is slated to take place every two years. The winning prize, 3000 euros, has been generously endowed by WhiteWall. Up to three other participants can be awarded an honorable mention by the jury.
The sponsoring partner of the EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD is WhiteWall. According to Thomas Alscheid, Managing Director of the online lab known for its award-winning gallery quality, "I am proud to announce our support as a sponsor. We believe in the power of collaboration and look forward to supporting emerging photographic artists. WhiteWall stands for the highest quality and aesthetics, and we bring those values to our partnerships to achieve impressive gallery-quality results."
